CBSS was appointed to prepare an Integrated Water and Waste Management Plan (“IWWMP”) to facilitate structured and effective water and waste management at Shanduka Coal (Pty) Ltd Coal’s Springlake Colliery Colliery. A repackaged Integrated Water Use License Application (“WULA”) was also included with the IWWMP for submission to the Department of Water Affairs (“DWA”), which led to the succesful issuing of a WUL.
Background information including a socio-economic profile and environmental profiles, key activities at the mine, surface and groundwater monitoring networks, assessment of impacts and risks of water uses arising from the key activities, and the management measures for water and waste management were included. The IWWMP summarised the above and contains an action plan to address significant risks, and identified the water uses associated with the activities at Springlake that require authorisation under a WUL, addressing the aspects to be considered by the DWA under Section 27 of the National Water Act 36 of 1998.Â
